Practicum
About the Program
The Practicum Program offers Emet students a unique opportunity to explore a topic of personal interest. Once a topic is selected, students are paired with experts in the relevant fields who can provide real-world insights and ongoing mentorship. Each student delivers a presentation on their Practicum and writes a summary of their experience. Students may choose a different Practicum each academic year. The cumulative summaries are added to their portfolios and will be appended to their transcripts for college applications.
Sports
A ninth-grade student interested in sports management spent time with the leader of a major New York City athletic facility. This opportunity provided a close-up view of the business and everything that goes into a major sports event.
Fashion
A student with an eye for fashion shadowed an Israeli-American designer. Together they walked through the process of creating and launching a new product line.
Finance
A student with a passion for finance was mentored by a financial services leader. These sessions covered key financial concepts and instruments – such as options – as well as the history of securities markets and their role in creating jobs and spurring American entrepreneurialism. Through the Practicum, this student secured a private meeting with the CEO of the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.
Technology
Technology-oriented students built a computer from scratch under the guidance of the CEO of a leading NYC-FinTech venture. They also developed a curriculum to introduce younger students to computer science.
Biology
A student interested in biology met biweekly with the CEO of a bio-tech company to discuss how the FDA structures drug trials. The student wrote summaries of the process and interesting FDA trials.
Law
In the field of law, one student was mentored by a federal appeals court judge. This 9th grade student studied and summarized briefs, and went to the federal courthouse once a month to observe and take notes on court proceedings.
